Miners, Cougars win volleyball matches Tuesday
MARQUETTE — Negaunee and Superior Central posted victories on a busy night of high school volleyball matches on Tuesday.
Negaunee won at Westwood 3-0, while Superior Central swept Gwinn at home and Marquette lost in three sets at Sault Ste. Marie.
All five of these teams from the area take a break for the Labor Day holiday, but get right back into action on Tuesday evening.
Superior Central hosts Stephenson at 6 p.m., while Westwood entertains L’Anse and Marquette plays at Menominee at 6:30 p.m. EDT, then Gwinn hosts Jeffers and Negaunee travels to Iron Mountain for 6:45 p.m. EDT matches.

Negaunee 3, Westwood 0
At Westwood, Miners head coach Krista Squiers credited “incredible play from many contributors” for her team’s 25-14, 25-9, 25-15 victory.
She specifically noted Emmeline Chaudier making 13 digs and Izzy Francisco 12, while Francisco also had a big 16-point service run.
A number of players each had multiple kills, too.
“I’m proud of their level of play this early in the year,” Squiers said in an email detailing the result. “This group has a solid foundation of skills and athleticism that is giving us the opportunity to make great plays all over the court.
“(This) was a great (match), and we’re looking forward to what this season has in store.”
Negaunee’s JV team also won in a 2-1 come-from-behind victory, while the Patriots freshmen team won 2-0.
Superior Ctl. 3, Gwinn 0
At Eben, the host Cougars prevailed 25-21, 25-23, 25-19 as sophomore Kylie Stuer led their offense with 13 kills.
“This young Cougar team played extremely well with good communication and unwavering energy,” SC head coach Kris Bray said.
Stuer added in nine service aces, three blocks and five digs. Freshman teammate Aubri Kroupa contributed six kills, five aces, two digs and an assist, while senior Marisa Strohm had four kills, two digs and two assists.
And Cougars sophomore setter Lilly Simon made two kills and four digs while dishing out 17 assists.
SS Marie 3, Marquette 0
At Sault Ste. Marie, the host Blue Devils won 25-23, 25-18, 25-17.
“Despite the loss, (we) showed strong defensive efforts at the net,” said MSHS head coach Melissa Butler in her email detailing the result. “(We) look to regroup and build on (these) defensive highlights as (we) prepare for (our) next game.”
Butler pointed out effective blocking throughout the match from Sentinels juniors Claire Parent, Sophie Hausmann and Bo Richardson.
