HOUGHTON — The Superiorland Ski Club high school teams were crowned overall state champions at the Michigan High School Cross Country Skiing Championships at the Michigan Tech University Ski Trails in Houghton from Feb. 28 to March 2.

The Superiorland girls led the way, winning their state title in a runaway, more than 70 points ahead of runner-up Vasa Raptors, 29 for the Marquette-based team and 95 for Vasa out of Traverse City.

The boys lost a close meet to Vasa, 39 to 42, giving Superiorland the overall crown with the team points between the teams added up.

SSC totaled 66 points to 134 for Vasa, while Calumet-based Peninsula Nordic was third with 194 and Copper Country Ski Tigers out of Houghton with 195. The Ishpeming Ski Club was next with 267 in a field of seven teams.

This was Superiorland’s first title since 2012 as senior Monet Argeropoulos led by winning every girls title available — classic, sprint, freestyle and pursuit races.

Junior Olin Slette also took first in the boys’ classic race.

Among the other Superiorland girls’ medal winners were Ida Larsen, second place in the girls classic, freestyle and pursuit; Evelyn Grant third in girls classic, freestyle and pursuit; Elisa Malherbe fifth in girls sprint and sixth in classic race; and Rosemary Elenbaas sixth in pursuit.

For the SSC boys, Slette added a fourth place in boys pursuit and sprint races, along with sixth in boys freestyle; Henry Plummer was second in sprint, fourth in freestyle, fifth in pursuit and sixth in classic; and Peter Argeropoulos was sixth in freestyle.

Slette and Monet Argeropoulos were headed to Soldier Hollow, Utah, to compete in the Great Lakes Division of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Junior Nationals a week after the states, while Larsen and Plummer would also ski for the Great Lakes Division in the Under-18 division and Grant in the Under-16 division at the Canadian nationals in Canmore, Alberta.
