Negaunee golfers sweep M-PC team titles, Emeralds’ Bellville medalist
CHAMPION — Negaunee swept to a victories of nearly 20 strokes in the boys meet and more than two dozen in the girls at the Mid-Peninsula Conference golf meet held at Wawonowin Country Club in Ely Township on Thursday.
The Miners showed off their depth as they didn’t have the individual medalist in either meet. Instead, Negaunee used the quality it has up and down its lineups to post quality team totals.
For the boys, with five full teams competing, Negaunee rolled to 333 for a 19-stroke victory over runner-up Westwood. Manistique was third with 356, followed by Iron Mountain with 361 and Gwinn 429.
With just two full teams in the girls meet, the Miners summed up 494 as the Patriots had 521. Manistique and IM each had three of the four requisite golfers to post a team score, while Gwinn had one.
Manistique’s DJ Bellville was medalist in the boys meet after he shot 80, edging out both Cash Karvonen of Negaunee and Cooper Pigeon of IM as those players each carded 81. Karvonen was awarded second place over Pigeon on a tiebreaker.
Right on their heels was the Miners’ Dane Saari with 82, Jordan Guenette with 84, Holden Meyer with 86 and Kody Baer, the medalist at the large Young’s Invitational in Iron River last week, added 88. All placed in the top 10 with Saari fourth, Guenette fifth, Meyer seventh and Baer 10th.
The rest of the top 10 included Westwood’s Eli Nutini in sixth with 85, teammate Tanner Annala in eighth with 86 and Manistique’s Ajay Berger in ninth with 88.
The balance of the Patriots’ lineup included Alex Turek with 90, Clifford Fossitt 91 and Kyle Krook 97.
For Manistique, their other three golfers were Jackson Goodreau with 90, Kaden Bradley 98 and John Weber 100.
Gwinn was led by Vinny Paulson shooting 97 as Andrew Hill posted 105, Nate Carter 111, Sage Melka 116 and Cooper Derouin 119.
After Pigeon, IM had Tim Recla totaling 90, Brayden Kassin 94, Adam Krackenberger 96 and Joey Wahoviak 111.
In the girls meet, the Mountaineers’ Olivia Fleming was medalist with 107, four strokes better than Negaunee’s Ady Crookham with 111. The Miners’ Sonya Erva was right after her with 119, while Westwood’s low scorer was next, Lyla Quinnell in fourth with 120.
Negaunee’s Reyna Debelak was eighth with 130, while Mialie Arbelius contributed 134.
For Westwood, Hailey Markham was seventh with 129, Taylor Keranen 10th with 133 and Kenzie Etelamaki put up 139.
Manistique’s Rose Spriks was sixth with 128, Allie Davis shot 141 and Lily Knaffla had 158.
Gwinn’s Luisa Medine shot 136, while for IM, Monroe Vedin was fifth with 124 and Gracie Webb ninth with 132.
All five M-PC teams will compete at the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Division 1 Finals tournament on Wednesday at next-door courses in Harris, the boys at Sage Run Golf Course and the girls at Sweetgrass Golf Club.
