Miners tennis downs Westwood to just keep on winning

ISHPEMING — Negaunee rode the wave created by winning the title at the Kingsford Invitational on Saturday to an easy dual meet victory at Westwood on Monday afternoon.

The Miners lost just five games in the five contested matches for an 8-0 shutout to improve to 7-1 this season.

That included No. 1 singles player Brady Johnson posting a 6-1, 6-0 win over the Patriots’ Xavier Grondz and the No. 2 doubles tandem of Quinn Walters and Carson Lajimodiere getting a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of Westwood’s Brody Aronson and Austin LaCosse.

Matches were not held at No. 4 singles nor Nos. 3 and 4 doubles due to Westwood not having entrants in them.

“All three of our singles players started the week strong,” Negaunee head coach Kyle Saari said. “Brady is growing into that No. 1 flight and figuring what it take to be successful there.

“He’s developed so much over the past three years, and he’s always sought ways to improve.

“Carson and Quinn have given us a reliable team all year long at No. 2 (doubles). They understand positioning, yet still know they can become more aggressive, which will let them hit another level.”

This was just the start of a busy week for the Miners, who hosted West Iron County on Tuesday before taking on a road doubleheader today, playing at Iron Mountain at 1 p.m. EDT and then at next-door Kingsford at 3 p.m. EDT.

The Patriots are just as busy after they hosted Munising on Tuesday, since they have a road match at Marquette at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Negaunee also hosts its own Negaunee Invitational on Friday morning that will include Westwood and Marquette.
