MARQUETTE — Three Northern Michigan University women’s track and field athletes have earned NCAA Division II All-Region honors for the college outdoor season from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The trio are junior Teiolla Harvey, freshman Alayna Vandegriff and senior Crystal Walker.
Their honors were made after they were determined to be among the top five individuals or a member of a top-three relay team in the Midwest Region.
Harvey was won at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships with her NMU record throw of 40.86 meters (134 feet, 5/8 of an inch) in the javelin, which also ranked her third in the Midwest.
Vandegriff stepped onto the college scene in her freshman year in the triple jump, making a leap of 11.84 meters (38-10 1/8) at the St. Norbert Invitational, getting her the No. 2 spot in the region.
And Walker was a double honoree, setting a top-five regional mark and school records in both the long jump and 100 hurdles, with both also happening to be set at the GLIAC Championships.
In the 100 hurdles, she clocked 13.68 seconds to not only qualify for the NCAA Championships next weekend, but rank third in the region, while in the long jump, she made a leap of 5.93 meters (19-5 1/2) to rank her fifth.
