Swajanen strong-arms Sentinels to softball sweep

MENOMINEE — The Marquette Senior High School softball team rode the strong arm of Charlye Swajanen on Wednesday in Menominee as she pitched every inning of a doubleheader sweep by the Sentinels.

Swajanen threw a seven-inning three-hitter in an opening 10-3 victory before allowing just one hit in a three-inning 15-0 whitewash in the nightcap.

Marquette has a pair of doubleheaders scheduled next week. The Sentinels play at Escanaba at 4 p.m. Monday, then host Menominee for the quick rematch at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Here is a rundown of the games at Menominee:

Marquette 10, Menominee 3

In the opener, Swajanen allowed just one earned run on three singles as she walked five and hit two batters, striking out 10 and throwing 118 pitches.

Maroons’ starter Ava Johnson went two innings, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks as she fanned three. Reliever Maddy Barker went the last five innings, giving up six runs on four hits and six walks as she K’d five.

Though the Sentinels fell behind 2-1 after one inning, MSHS scored at least one run in each of the next four innings to build an 8-2 lead. They also scored twice in the top of the seventh for insurance.

Layla Roman and Keira Lindberg each had two of Marquette’s seven hits, with Lindberg collecting a triple and double and Roman a pair of doubles. Roman also had two RBIs, while Lindberg had one RBI and scored twice as each drew a walk.

Teammate Halle Haynes also hit a triple in her only official at-bat as she was walked in four instances, scoring four times, stealing two bases and earning an RBI.

Roman’s first-inning double brought home a run, then in the second, a wild pitch, Haynes’ bases-load walk and an Eva Dewitt single to center each scored a run. Lindberg’s triple down the left field line and a Haynes walk each scored a run in the third.

Jazmine Jasenovsky paced the Maroons’ three-hit offense with two singles as she also had two RBIs.

Marquette 15, Menominee 0

For the nightcap, Swajanen threw another 39 pitches, giving her 157 for the day, as she allowed just one single and one walk in the three innings, fanning four.

She and Dewitt each went 2 of 3, Swajanen knocking in three runs and walking once, while Dewitt hit a double, scored two times and was hit by a pitch.

Despite collecting just six hits, the Sentinels scored five times in each inning to invoke the 15-run rule as they drew 12 walks and were hit by pitches five times. Neither team committed an error.

Savannah Houle started on the pitching rubber for Menominee but lasted only for one out, allowing five earned runs on two hits with four walks. Addy Johnson had the Maroons’ only hit.
