Chris Scott, Elizabeth Dollas score big wins in Marquette Marathon

MARQUETTE — A pair of runners scored decisive victories in the full marathon that was the featured race during the Marquette Marathon held in Marquette County on Saturday morning.

Chris Scott of Libertyville, Illinois, crossed the finish line at the Superior Dome in Marquette in 2 hours, 33 minutes and 53.4 seconds, a more than 11-minute victory in the male competition over runner-up Kris Miller of Detroit, who clocked 2:44:56.5.

Scott’s victory was so big that Miller’s time was closer to the 11th-place finisher than to Scott’s.

The female race had a similar finish as Elizabeth Dollas of Amesbury, Massachusetts, won in 2:54:55.1, a more than 19 1/2-minute advantage over runner-up Jessica Paschke of Forest Lake, Minnesota, who finished in 3:14:33.2.

And Paschke’s time was closer to the 20th-place finisher than to Dollas.

There were 359 entrants listed on the Superior Timing website at www.superiortiming.com, with 161 who finished in the male category and 127 in the female. In all, there were about 1,200 participants in the various events on Saturday.

This event hosted by Northern Michigan University Athletics is an official Boston Marathon qualifier.

The remainder of the men’s top five included Jackson Fowler of downstate Lowell, third in 2:45:15.4; Brian Shrout of Jacksonville, Florida, fourth in 2:47:49.8; and Kyle Verrett Kiel of downstate Kewadin, fifth in 2:47:53.7.

The highest finishing male runner listed from the Upper Peninsula was Alex Tiseo of Marquette, who was 22nd in 3:07:47.9. He is the athletic director at Marquette Senior High School.

Next from the area was Joe Vizena of Marquette, 34th in 3:19:21.1. Isaac Kangas of Atlantic Mine was 53rd in 3:31:59.1, while David Ward of Marquette was 54th in 3:33:06.1. Kangas was also the top finisher in the 19-and-under age group.

Scott Couture of Ishpeming was 61st in 3:40:03.1, while Wyatt Eisenberger of Marquette was 63rd in 3:40:12.8. Couture was also third in the 60-69 age group.

Jeff Nyquist of Marquette, Matthew Johnson of Negaunee, Peter Wertanen of Negaunee, John Garceau of Marquette and Tony Jurecic of Negaunee also broke into the top 80. Wertanen, who clocked 3:47:35.6 to finish 73rd, was the top finisher among those 70 years and older.

In the female division, Eve Morissette of Port St. Lucie, Florida, finished third in 3:16:37.7, with Maggie McTeague of Chicago fourth in 3:17:24.5 and Erica Nelson of Marquette fifth in 3:18:26.3.

Nelson was also considered the winner in the 20-29 age group as the top three overall finishers don’t get an age-group finish.

Also from the U.P., Abbey Kelto of Marquette was 14th in 3:27:39.4, Georgia Frazier of Rapid River 36th in 3:50:07.7, Chandra Ziegler of Marquette 37th in 3:51:56.8, Taylor Vanoss of Rapid River 38th in 3:52:34.2 and Krista Vetort of Stephenson 43rd in 3:54:50.8. Vanoss was the top finisher in the 19-under age group.

Kristin Tuominen of Negaunee was 44th in 3:56:12.2, Cicily Fortin of Negaunee 55th in 4:13:16.0 and Jenny Roberts of Iron River 64th in 4:22:03.4.

Nicole Thomas of Ishpeming, Vanessa Steigauf of Marquette, Katie Urban of Bruce Crossing, Kathryn Husing of Iron Mountain, Sarah Garceau of Marquette, Nathalie Dahlstrom of Marquette and Jessica Cameron of Iron Mountain also broke into the top 100.

In the 13.1-mile half marathon which included 648 participants, 284 finishers were listed in the female division and 175 in the male.

Natalie Anderson of Menominee won the female division in 1:21:46.9, a more than 30-second advantage over runner-up Katie Lakin of downstate Wyandotte, who clocked 1:22:24.9.

Charles Smogoleski of downstate Eaton Rapids won the male crown in a course-record 1:06:06.7, about 55 seconds ahead of runner-up Ian Torchia of Ann Arbor in 1:07:01.2. Torchia is a former member of the Nordic ski team at Northern Michigan University who won an NCAA championship in that sport in 2018.

The rest of the female top five included Laura Portis of Boulder, Colorado, third in 1:24:18.4; Brittany Kennedy-Quear of Clarksville, Tennessee, fourth in 1:26:09.5; and Jami Hollandsworth of downstate Williamsburg, fifth in 1:26:31.2.

The top area finisher was Janet Hackett of Marquette, 14th in 1:35:16.3. Amanda Jasso of Escanaba was right behind her in 15th in 1:35:22.6. Danielle Mattson of Michigamme was 17th in 1:36:54.1.

For the men, rounding out the top five was Alex Dennis of Marquette, third in 1:09:29.7; Lyle O’Brien of Boulder, Colorado, fourth in 1:10:51.7; and Samuel Parlette of White Lake, fifth in 1:16:30.9.

Also from the area was Jorgen Chapin of Marquette in 12th in 1:21:59.8, Neal Collick of Negaunee 17th in 1:26:26.0, Soren Vigesaa of Marquette 21st in 1:28:27.4, Jin Conlin of Marquette 25th in 1:31:19.0 and Rob Hanson of Marquette 26th in 1:32:36.2.

In the Wildcat five-kilometer run with 183 participants, Chessie Sergey of Marquette won the female division by more than a minute in 22:00.5. Jennifer Naasz of Detroit was runner-up in 23:15.1.

Pamela Malmsten of Ishpeming was fourth in 23:43.7, while Bridget Holliday of Marquette was fifth in 23:56.5.

For the men, Anthony Plana of Frankenmuth won in 18:25.7 with Matthew Eliason of Chicago runner-up in 18:42.6. Thomas Jenkins of Gwinn was 10th in 20:09.2.

In the Marathon Relay coed division, the Red, White and Blue team based in Marquette of Tammy LaMere, Sam Beauchamp and Jeff Gregorich won in 2:49:21.3.

In the female division, Just A Little Competitive of Marquette that included Katie Kubont, Kelly Quigley and Anne Perala was runner-up.

And in the male division, Nicolet Relay of Manistique made up of Mark Calhoun and Jeremy Bloomfield was also runner-up.
