MARQUETTE — With a home date at the Kaufman Sports Complex tonight, the Marquette Senior High School boys soccer team has plenty of momentum following an 8-0 mercy-rule-shortened win at Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday.
The Sentinels improved to 4-1 following their big road win called at halftime due to that eight-goal rule. Marquette hosts Kingsford at 6 p.m. today in north Marquette.
Last week, MSHS was dominant at both ends of the pitch as 11 players recorded at least one point, which included two-goal games by Finn Stiles, Kaleb Chipelewski and Henry Wood.
But the Sentinels also smothered the Soo on defense, not “allowing” their goalminder, Edan Hautamaki, to make a save or even face an attempted shot.
“I challenged the team to play a complete game on both sides of the ball, which they did,” Marquette head coach Dan Salmon said in an email detailing the result. “We had a lot of good passes and teamwork.”
Stiles had the biggest offensive night, also throwing in an assist before he scored his team’s final two goals.
Chipelewski opened the scoring on a goal that was assisted by Charlie Hrodey, while Wood then added his first goal off a pass from Stiles.
After that came a Liam Hewitt goal assisted by Mason Bocklund, then Wood’s second goal helped out by Seth Sandstrom that made it 4-0.
Cody Struck then struck for a goal that was assisted by Dixon Poggi, followed by Chipelewski getting his second of the night from Poggi and Jack Pond.
Stiles then put in the final two tallies, the first unassisted and the second assisted by Nick Kucharek.
