More big honors: Northern Michigan University swimmers, divers rack up more school records, All-American awards at nationals
The five-day meet ended Saturday at the SPIRE Institute pool in Geneva, Ohio, with the Wildcat men coming in 15th place with 96 points among 59 teams with representatives at the men’s meet.
NMU finished just behind fellow GLIAC member Wayne State’s 107 as the GLIAC’s Grand Valley State was sixth with 236. Also from Northern’s conference, Saginaw Valley State was 21st with 45, while Davenport was tied for 34th with six. The University of Tampa won the meet with 473 points as Drury was runner-up with 409.
The Northern women finished in 19th, also out of 59 teams, with 63 points.
Wayne State was the GLIAC’s top finisher in 12th with 137, while GVSU was 16th with 81. Davenport was tied for 37th with three as Nova Southeastern won with 487 and Colorado Mesa was a close second with 461 1/2.

Quartet twice All-Americans
The Wildcats’ relay team of William LaCount, Jef Leroux, Gabriel Fulconi and Leo Nolles set school records and earned All-American status on both Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, they clocked 1 minute, 19.04 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle relay to finish ninth and be named Second Team All-American.
Then they came back on Saturday and did even better in the 400 free relay, coming in sixth in 2:54.26, just 0.13 of a second behind fifth-place Grand Valley, to earn First Team All-American honors.
Wyatt Dickman opened Friday for the NMU men by breaking the school record in the 100 breaststroke in 53.85 seconds during the morning preliminaries. He then clocked 54.08 in the evening to finish 14th for Second Team All-American honors.
Teammate Tobie Stiles was also a Second Team All-American in three-meter diving after he placed 11th with 468.00 points in the finals.
On Saturday, Nolles started a busy day by placing 12th in the 100 free in 43.65 seconds, again earning Second Team All-American status.

Carbone a First Teamer
The NMU women’s highlight over the final two days of the nationals was set by Camilla Carbone in the 100 backstroke when she placed seventh in 55.03 seconds to earn a First Team All-American award.
Teammate Meritxell Font Cantarero broke a school record while earning Second Team All-American honors for placing 11th in the 200 butterfly in 2:01.52.
On Saturday, the Wildcats’ quartet of Carlotta Santi, Font Cantarero, Zoe DeKievit and Carbone finished 19th in the 400 free relay in 3:32.42 to miss Second Team All-American status by three places. Wayne State was 16th in the event and Grand Valley 17th.
