MARQUETTE — All-American Camilla Carbone of the Northern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team earned one of the most prestigious honors this week from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The NMU sophomore from Rovellasca, Italy, joined Wildcats’ women’s basketball player Makaylee Kuhn in winning a Commissioner’s Award from the conference.

Six female and six male athletes who are juniors, seniors or graduate students from around the conference earn this award after the fall, winter and spring sports seasons for excelling in both the classroom and in competition.

Carbone compiled an excellent 3.98 grade-point average and also earned three All-American honors at the NCAA Division II Championships in mid-March in Ohio, including First Team honors in the 100-yard backstroke and 200 medley relay and Second Team All-America in the 400 medley relay.

She dominated at the GLIAC Championships before that, winning both the 100 back and 200 medley relay and taking second in the 400 medley relay and fourth in the 200 backstroke.

During the regular season, she set multiple records, including school records in the 50 back and 200 medley relay, and pool records in the 50 back, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay.

And Carbone was named GLIAC Swimmer of the Week in the early stages of the season while winning nine races throughout the season.
