Marquette, Negaunee boys post high school tennis wins

MARQUETTE — Marquette swept the doubles flights and did just enough in singles to pull out a 5-3 high school boys tennis victory over visiting Westwood on Thursday afternoon.

The Redmen’s four doubles units were able to counteract the wind to win each of their matches in two sets, while No. 4 singles player Caleb Janofski pulled out a three-set victory over the Patriots’ John Thomsen, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

“Hats off to all the players and their ability to deal with the wind,” MSHS head coach Karl Thomsen said in an email. “I think this is the first match all year that we had a stiff breeze to go along with tough opponents.

“Our doubles teams had a really good day…. All four teams have steadily been improving, but not always coming up with the victory. So I’m happy for their sake they were able to put a check mark in the ‘W’ column.”

Those winners were Keaton Ansell and Isaac Johnson at No. 1, Liam McFarren and Andrew King at No. 2, Holden Hutter and Bodhi White at No. 3, and Abe Kentala and Connor Stade at No. 4.

“Westwood has a very solid singles lineup and they were able to take three of the four matches,” Marquette’s Thomsen said. “Caleb Janofski was able to rally after dropping the first set and win the next two sets. That was a big moment for Caleb, because his win sealed the team victory for us.”

Westwood needed three sets to clinch two of its three singles victories, with the only straight-sets winner being Patrick Klumpp at No. 2. The Pats’ three-set wins came via Andrew Niemi at No. 1 and Jaxson Alderton at No. 3.

Negaunee 8, Iron Mountain 0

On Wednesday at Iron Mountain, the Miners breezed through another dual match to improve to 10-0.

“The focus has continued to be good, but we’re looking forward to some practice time to work on a few things together,” Miners head coach Kyle Saari said in an email immediately after the match. “These next few days are important to refresh for what’s left ahead.”

That includes Negaunee hosting its own Negaunee Invitational today.

Against the Mountaineers, Negaunee lost just 11 games total in the eight flights, led by 6-0, 6-0 shutouts posted by No. 3 singles player Mick Kumpula and No. 4 singles player Tyler Lajimodiere.

“Mick continues to roll for us and his confidence has been high all year,” Saari said. “Many of these guys have been in the program a few years and they’re growth has been a lot of fun to watch.”
