Zach competes at FINA worlds; NMU swimmers earn salute

BUDAPEST, Hungary — Northern Michigan University swimmer Ondrej Zach hit the water again, competing in the FINA World Championships, which brings together the best distance swimmers in the world.

The event started on June 18 and will go through Sunday.

Zach competed in two events; his first was the Men’s 5K. He swam at a time of 56:28.90, which landed him in 24th.

Zach wrapped up his time at the FINA World Championships swimming in the Men’s 10K. He landed in 15th place, crossing the line at 1:5:27.80.

Also, the Northern Michigan Swim & Dive team has been lauded for academics.

The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America selected 731 teams from 441 institutions to the Scholar All-America Team for the spring 2022 semester. Teams were selected on the basis of their spring 2022 grade point averages and represent 17,845 student-athletes.

The highest team GPAs come from Division III programs. Caltech women, for the second time in a row, lead the standings with a 3.97 GPA. Pacific Lutheran is the top men’s program at 3.85.

Harvard’s men and Stanford’s women lead the Division I list with team GPA’s of 3.78 and 3.83, respectively. Roberts Wesleyan’s men (3.66) and Fairmont State’s women (3.84) top the Division II category. SCAD-Savannah is best among all NAIA schools for both the men (3.56) and women’s (3.80) rankings. NJCAA schools are led by Southwestern Oregon men (3.27) and women (3.54).

The NMU women made the list with a GPA of 3.51 while the men’s GPA of 3.01 got them on the list.

CSCAA Executive Director Samantha Barnay had this to say about Northern Michigan: “Coach Heidi Voigt is a valuable member of the CSCAA board. She has led this program to academic success consistently and we are excited to celebrate Northern Michigan as a Scholar All-America program.”
