Detroit Red Wings beat Carolina Hurricanes, 3-1, to even season series

The Detroit Red Wings’ scored an empty net goal with 55 seconds remaining to clinch a 3-1 victory and even the season series 3-3 against the Carolina Hurricanes, which is tied for the most points in the NHL’s Central Division. With the game scoreless after two periods, Detroit’s Adam Erne opened the scoring just 24 seconds into the third period with his 11th goal of the season. Michael Rasmussen got his first of two assists on the play. Teammate Filip Zadina made it 2-0 just over two minutes later before Carolina made it a one-goal game again with 6:06 remaining on a score by Nino Niederreiter. Jonathan Bernier stopped 37 shots to get the win in the Wings’ net, while the Hurricanes’ James Reimer had 27 stops. (AP photo)
