Marquette Redettes’ Olivia Moffitt, Marquette teams win Great Northern Conference cross country titles

MARQUETTE — Senior Olivia Moffitt won the girls race by more than 18 seconds to lead the Marquette Senior High School girls cross country squad to the team title at the Great Northern Conference meet held in Marquette on Thursday.

The Redettes scored 27 points to easily win their meet as runner-up Gladstone had 65, Menominee 71 and Gladstone 72. Escanaba didn’t field a full team.

While Gladstone’s Drew Hughes won the boys race in what appears to be a photo finish ahead of Marquette’s Carson VanderSchaaf, the Redmen were relatively easy winner in the team standings.

MSHS scored 25 points to 44 for Gladstone, 77 for Menominee and 92 for Escanaba. Kingsford didn’t field a full team.

Both Hughes and VanderSchaaf were listed on the Superior Timing website, www.superiortiming.com, with finishing times of 17 minutes, 31.9 seconds on a 3.1-mile course, but Hughes was listed in first place and VanderSchaaf second.

Both Marquette teams’ depth carried them to their victories. The Marquette boys had six of the top 10 finishers, including second, third and fourth, while the Redettes also had six in the top 10, including every place from fifth through ninth.

Moffitt won her race in 21:11.2 as Kingsford senior Sarah Kulas was runner-up in 21:29.6. Following Menominee’s Hayden Buck and Attica Brandt in third and fourth, respectively, came Marquette senior Lillian Weycher in fifth in 22:18.4, then teammates Guinn Wuorinen, a senior, in sixth in 22:21.3; sophomore Anna Grzelak seventh in 22:41.3; junior Jordann Stephenson eighth in 22:45.3; and junior Ella Whalen ninth in 22:50.5.

Just for good measure, MSHS sophomore Elodie Mahlerbe was 13th in 23:15.3.

For the boys after VanderSchaaf was sophomore teammate Colin VanderSchaaf third in 17:35.2, MSHS junior Luke Janofski fourth in 17:39.1, senior teammate Lincoln Sager seventh in 18:29.0, MSHS freshman Cully Papin ninth in 18:41.3 and sophomore teammate Brady Ketzenberger 10th in 18:51.3.

Backing them up was Marquette senior Cadin Cahill, 12th in 19:15.3.
