MSHS boys 2nd, girls 5th at Gladstone golf

GLADSTONE — The Marquette boys finished runners-up and the girls fifth at the second Great Northern Conference meet of the season on Tuesday at Terrace Bluff.

The Redmen had 166 total strokes with each competitor playing nine holes while the host Braves had 160. Escanaba was third with 171, Kingsford had 184 and Menominee didn’t post a team score.

Tyler Bergwall was runner-up for medalist honors with 38 as Gladstone’s Rudy Peterson claimed honors with 32.

MSHS’ Joseph Luke contributed 42, Ethan Sellers 43 and Jordan Jurmu 43.

Marquette totaled 241 in the girls meet that was won by Esky with 210. Menominee was a close second with 212, Gladstone had 230 and Kingsford 238.

Lea Whelan paced the Redettes with 51, the fourth best girls score of the day. Escanaba’s Paxton Johnson shot the only sub-40 round with 36.

Also for Marquette, Morgan Rhoades shot the sixth-best round of the day with 53, Callie Gentz had 62 and Ruth Hummell 75.
