Marquette boys tennis ties Kingsford, Gwinn falls to IM

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School boys tennis team earned a 4-4 tie with Kingsford in a home meet on Thursday afternoon.

Marquette is now 4-1-1 on the season after the split matches.

The Redmen took three out of four singles victories on the day which came from Alex Olivier, Kevin Zhang and Jack Franchino.

Olivier defeated Kingsford’s Brett Hicks 6-1, 6-0 in No. 1 singles while Zhang topped Matt Moreau 0-6, 6-1, 6-3 in No. 3 singles and Franchino defeated Logan Smith 6-3, 62 in the No. 4 slot.

The Flivvers’ lone singles victory came at No. 2 with Nick McCole defeating Marquette’s Trevor Lewis 6-0, 6-2.

It was the exact opposite on the doubles side of the day with the Flivvers taking three out of four matches from the Redmen on that end.

In No. 1 doubles, Kingsford’s Tyler Beauchamp and Daunte Fortner defeated the team of Marquette’s Mitchell Connon and Connor Johnson 6-4, 6-3.

Jack Perpich and Caleb Boone also picked up a two-set win for the Flivvers in No. 3 doubles defeating Justyn Huskey and Rory O’Connor 6-3, 6-0. In No. 4 doubles, Reece Fortner and Tyler Kopp topped Luke Ferzacca and Soren Higgins 6-2, 6-0.

Marquette’s lone doubles victory came in the No. 2 slot with the team of Ryan Glover and Aidan Claffey defeating Kingsford’s Bruce Bilgreen and Travis Taft 6-2, 7-6 (12-10).

Marquette travels to Escanaba on Monday.

Iron Mountain 5, Gwinn 3

At Gwinn, despite a strong singles performance on Thursday, the Gwinn High School boys tennis team fell to Iron Mountain 5-3 at the GHS tennis courts.

Gwinn head coach Dan Turecky said his singles team is getting better each and every match.

“My singles players are improving tremendously as the season progresses,” he said. “We won three of the four singles flights. It was another unusually cool and windy day on the courts.”

The Modeltowners’ three singles victories came in the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 slots.

In No. 2 singles, it was a three-set battle with Jared Rowland defeating Shane Brooks 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

“I was especially impressed with Jared in a three-set come-from-behind victory,” Turecky said.

No. 3 saw Austin Forbes defeat Dominic Schinderle 6-0, 6-2 while Chase Jensen defeated Blake Julian 7-6, 6-3 in No. 4.

Iron Mountain’s lone singles victory came at No. 1 with Ryan Kakamaki defeating Jacob Porubsky 6-4, 7-6.

The Mountaineers had the upper-hand in doubles however, taking all four matches, three of which came by default.

The only tight match was No. 1 doubles which saw Iron Mountain’s Dakota Galeazzi and Joey Bogaudo defeat Mason Bockert and Tucker Taylor in a three-set match that lasted two hours 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Turecky said the defaults were due to other obligations from his student-athletes.

“We were short-staffed as most of our doubles teams were either in the school play or finishing up drivers education, so we had to default three flights of doubles,” he said.

Gwinn hosts Ishpeming on Tuesday.
