Gladstone baseball continues strong season with win over Redmen

GLADSTONE — Parent’s Night for Gladstone Braves baseball was a success Thursday night all the way around with an impressive 12-6 win over the Marquette Redmen.

Marquette’s Hunter Doucette hit a two run second inning home run for a short-lived 2-0 lead before the Braves erupted for five runs in the second inning to take the lead for good.

Cody Frappier’s double off the wall in left center field with the bases loaded was the key hit of the five-run explosion. “Cody has been hitting the ball for us this season and his hit off the fence in center field and clearing the bases was a big boost for us,” said Braves’ coach Don Lauscher. “The hit picked up the whole team and we continued to put the pressure on. We didn’t panic when we got down early and we answered their runs with more runs of our own.”

Gladstone (22-2) had a trio of players with three hits to pace the 11-hit offensive attack. Frappier was 3-4 with 3 RBIs, Carson Shea had three hits and winning pitcher Clay Cole from the lead off spot in the lineup was 3-4 with 3 RBIs.

The Braves scored five runs in the second inning and added three more tallies in both the fourth and fifth stanzas plus a single run scored in the sixth.

Doucette led Marquette with 4 RBIs and the Redmen scored three runs in the fifth to close the gap to 8-6 before Gladstone answered back with three runs in the bottom of the frame to go up 11-6.

Cole pitched six innings for the mound win and struck out seven Redmen, walked two and allowed six runs. “Cole was throwing strikes and you want your pitchers to use the defense and we played well defensively, said Lauscher. Marquette is a good hitting team and you’ve got to give them credit too.”

Zach Hanson pitched the seventh inning allowing no hits and striking out two.

The Braves next play a Saturday doubleheader at Iron Mountain, noon and 2 p.m. And at Green Bay Southwest on Monday, 530.

“We have a big week of games next week against some top teams,” said Lauscher. “Next week is a big week for us and we are playing well as a team.”
