Copper Kings break tie in 3rd period to defeat Marquette icers

CALUMET — Dean Loukus scored the game-winning goal as the Calumet Copper Kings earned a 3-2 win over the Marquette Redmen on Saturday night at the Calumet Colosseum.

Tied 2-2, Loukus scored with 9:53 left in the third period for the go-ahead goal, while Brent Loukus and Sam Erkkila assisted.

Brent Loukus opened the scoring just 28 seconds in when he scored unassisted. His second goal of the night with 1:44 left in the second period tied the game 2-2. Tanner Rowe and Scott Loukus assisted.

Marquette’s Sean O’Connor and Tanner Phillips each scored on the power play in the second period for the Redmen’s goals.

Calumet’s Alex Studebaker finished with 24 saves, while Marquette’s Tyler Bergwall made 19 stops.

The Redmen host the Marquette Showcase at Lakeview Arena this weekend. MSHS faces Sault Ste. Marie at 8 p.m. Friday and downstate Saline at 3 p.m. Saturday.

After that, Marquette hosts Negaunee at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4.
