Westwood Patriots volleyball team breezes past Ishpeming and onto district finale

NEGAUNEE — Elizabeth Farley recorded 18 kills and 16 digs to lead Westwood team to a three-set victory over Ishpeming in the Class C volleyball district tournament held at Negaunee’s Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium on Tuesday.

The Patriots won 25-17, 25-14, 25-10.

“Overall I thought we played really well,” Westwood head coach Heather Salmi said. “When you can come out and win in three in a district (match), that’s great.

“We all hustled really well tonight, we didn’t let a lot of balls drop, we communicated really well and it was a good team win for us.”

Ishpeming head coach Katt Beerling declined comment post-match.

Westwood started Set 1 by jumping out to a 5-2 lead. The Hematites pulled within 5-4 before Westwood went back up by two on a service error.

Later in the set, up 13-10, the Patriots went on a four-point run and scored seven of the next eight, clinching the set on an attack error.

The Patriots scored three straight points to erase an early deficit in Set 2. Westwood’s biggest run was four points to go up 19-10. The Pats again took the set on an attack error.

Westwood dominated Set 3 as well, scoring six unanswered points to go up 8-2. While the Hematites showed hints of clawing back, the Patriots; attack proved too strong. Westwood scored 15 of the final 18 points to clinch the match.

Westwood leaders aside from Farley included Sarah Rautio with 12 digs, eight assists and two aces; Katie Wiljanen with three digs and seven kills; and Aliya Leach with three aces.

Statistics for Ishpeming weren’t available.

Salmi said Thursday’s matchup against district host Negaunee will have the team anxious to get on the court.

“We’re looking forward to Thursday,” she said. “You can’t predict the future but I’m hoping we come out and play hard.”
