Jesse Matson, Cade Contreras ignite Munising Mustangs in boys basketball victory over Engadine, 62-50

MUNISING — Jesse Matson and Cade Contreras scored 15 points each to help the Munising High School boys basketball team down visiting Engadine 62-50 Monday night.

Matson did so in mostly three quarters of play, since he ran into foul trouble early on and sat out most of the second.

After a 22-22 halftime tie, the Mustangs went on a 20-6 run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Munising made 23 of 37 attempts from the field, a 62 percent success rate, with nine from Contreras.

Anthony Mattson also reached double-digit scoring with 13 points.

Munising (9-1) was coming off its first loss of the season last week to Carney-Nadeau, and Munising head coach Terry Kienitz said the loss was on their minds.

“We came out and wanted to make a statement,” Kienitz said. “We stressed that all game and at halftime, and our guys picked it up in the second half. Fouls slowed the pace of the game, but we had a big push in the third to take the game.”
