Copperwood Mine Project a bad idea

To the Journal editor: The Copperwood Mine Project is guaranteed destruction to not only the western Upper Peninsula, but Lake Superior as well (impacting Wisconsin, Minnesota, the rest of the Upper Peninsula, Canada and everything downstream). EGLE, Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, should not be granting permits to a project that would lead to the clear-cutting of Upper Peninsula forests, the destruction of wetlands and the rerouting of streams. The Great Lakes Basin, especially around Lake Superior, is one of the most beautiful areas in the world. How ...

The Washington Post on nuclear innovation in the age of AI

As America’s energy demands grow exponentially, the country won’t be able to keep up without more nuclear power. For decades, the climate-friendly industry has been held back by overly burdensome regulations, but that’s beginning to change. In the 1960s, plants took about four years to build, and they cost, in today’s dollars, about $1,500 per kilowatt of electricity generated. But I’m willing to bet that you’ve never heard of the Superfund site that is sitting right across from Lake Superior, across from one of those very beaches. Located on Lakeshore Drive, in between Wright and Hawley this Superfund site is actually in the process of being restored. Thanks to the Environmental Protection Agency, the city of Marquette was given $1 million in order to fix this site. The current Lakeshore restoration ...

Ways to reduce exposure to ‘forever chemicals’

It seems like every week brings some new report about the dangers of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — better known as PFAS — and the extent to which these “forever chemicals” have spread into the environment. In light of this growing threat, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has provided some guidance on ways to reduce exposure to PFAS whenever possible. “Michigan leads the nation in addressing PFAS contamination issues,” said Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director. “As part of our continuing efforts to protect the health and safety of Michigan families, ...
