Vote for the party that respects and honors women

To the Journal editor: I can sympathize with those who oppose abortion. I do not believe that any woman considers abortion lightly. But what happens when the government intervenes in a decision that should be between a woman and her doctor? We’ve seen it already, in states where abortion has been outlawed or severely restricted. Women whose fetus is not viable forced to carry it to term. Doctors afraid of losing their license or even being imprisoned forced to make a decision that could imperil the mother’s life. Girls who have been raped forced to go to another state to ...

No clear winner in VP debate

To the Journal editor: My sense is that JD Vance improved his image during the VP debate. He was articulate and appeared more likable than many people expected. That said, on technical debating points Vance made so many inaccurate and misleading statements that it is hard to declare him the winner. Tim Walz also had good moments, but he muffed some easy questions, obfuscated on others, and failed to respond to many of Vance’s misleading statements. Walz’s responses became more focused and effective as the debate progressed, especially when Vance dodged the question about who won ...

Considerations for MAPS board of education election

To the Journal editor: Current Marquette Area Public Schools Board og Education President Kristen Cambensy and Vice President Glenn Sarka deserve a vote of confidence as they run for re-election in this fall’s nonpartisan school board election. And newcomer Cassidy Thomas is the right choice for the third open seat. The current board and staff should be commended for addressing the real issues of educating students and keeping them safe. The current board has invested in new science labs, playground improvements and security, improved the pay for support staff, reduced the ...

Lots happening in Negaunee

To the Journal editor: As a lifelong resident of Negaunee, I think it is important to draw attention to the amazing work that has been accomplished within the community from an economic and community development perspective. All you need to do is drive down the U.S. 41 corridor and through the downtown to see the progress that has been happening. Iron Street not only has had an overhaul of its infrastructure, but the streetscaping looks amazing! From the band shell and its Wednesday concerts to the Iron Ore Heritage Trail head, there is so much happening. And lets not forget the ...

Abortion state by state?

To the Journal editor: Donald Trump is now trying to distance himself from the written Republican Project 2025 plan for a nationwide ban on abortion by claiming that he just wants to leave it up to the individual states to vote and decide for themselves. That may sound to some at first, to be somewhat democratic and rational. But letting the states individually decide on whether to ban abortion or to have freedom of choice, would result in different standards of medical care in different geographic locations within the U.S. That means that the standard of care in the ...

Clarification on recent ‘Imagination’ updates

To the Journal editor: A recent television story, “Free kids’ books available for Marquette, Alger counties,” regarding Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has generated some questions. As the founding program partner for DPIL in Marquette and Alger counties, Literacy Legacy Fund of Michigan has received inquiries from the public and supporters regarding recent updates and wanted to provide clarification. “Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is dedicated to inspiring a love of reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age five, through funding shared ...
