Copperwood Mine Project a bad idea

To the Journal editor: The Copperwood Mine Project is guaranteed destruction to not only the western Upper Peninsula, but Lake Superior as well (impacting Wisconsin, Minnesota, the rest of the Upper Peninsula, Canada and everything downstream). EGLE, Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, should not be granting permits to a project that would lead to the clear-cutting of Upper Peninsula forests, the destruction of wetlands and the rerouting of streams. Cliffs-Dow deserves ‘recognition’

If you live in Marquette during the summer, then you've definitely spent your fair share of time relaxing on one of the many beaches this town has to offer. But I’m willing to bet that you’ve never heard of the Superfund site that is sitting right across from Lake Superior, across from one of those very beaches. Located on Lakeshore Drive, in between Wright and Hawley this Superfund site is actually in the process of being restored. This year is our 250th anniversary honoring our Founders forming and uniting a country under their vision of unalienable rights. The Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights created our American identity, our shared common knowledge bond. Real cost explored

To the Journal editor: What is the real cost of Marquette Public Schools $59.995 million dollar bond proposal? The amount the tax payers will be repaying will include the cost of interest on this figure and the length of time it will be repaid. I request that MAPS supply us, the taxpayers, with the total to be repaid, based upon best estimates of the interest rate to be charged. That figure is no $59.995 million. It is much more. Great night at Ore Dock

Thank you Movie Mom organizers, planners and volunteers for the wonderful evening we all had at the Ore Dock on Saturday, Feb. 7. What a night of of pure joy, fun and camraderie with so many wonderful women. Our shared interest brought us together and it was a much needed escape on a cold winter's night. Not only did we get to dress up, enjoy snacks and raffles but be entertained by Elvis as we danced the night away. Movie Moms, you outdid yourselves. Natural gas OK for now

To the Journal editor: This is in regard to Michigan House Bills 4007 and 4283, natural gas, RICE generators and Marquette City Commission support for them. Up until 2019, the Marquette city residents relied primarily on coal for generation of electricity, with a bit of hydropower. While coal was in use, in spite of meeting EPA requirements, at times I could still observe faint emission streams floating over Lake Superior. Thankfully that is all behind us now.
