What would founders say?

To the Journal editor:

This week, we watched Ken Burns epic, “The American Revolution” on PBS television. It caused me to pause and ponder the utter irony of the juxtaposition with the present state of our country’s politics and government.

The show basically tells a story of the true American patriots …with their cold hands, wet clothes, tired, lonely, hungry bellies, doubt, and fears who persevered through intolerable conditions to wrest themselves from an authoritarian regime. The endured atrocious conditions in the field to ultimate success in battle, and to deliver themselves and their posterity (us) to ultimate victory. A gift of unimaginable value namely self government, indeed a government of, by and for the people.

Today we watch as that gift is being taken away from us. We watch as naked politics manages our government. How many of the original 27 grievances enumerated in our Declaration of Independence and laid at the feet of King George by our founders as the reason for our separation from his rule/kingdom are being openly and unapologetically sundered. Count them for yourselves how ironic.

How ironic and what a desecration of the honor of those who suffered to deliver the gift of democracy to us 250 years ago. How painfully ironic.

Starting at $3.23/week.
