Recent election news offers hope for people in U.P.
Democrats won big (one week ago) Tuesday, in favor of moderate Democratic governors in Virginia and New Jersey, in favor of new congresional districts in Caifornia and in favor of Zohran Mamdani for the mayor of New York City.
Mamdani’s campaign excited young people who have lost hope and that is a good sign for the future, not just in New York but in Michigan as well.
The people who voted Democratic (one week ago) Tuesday, like the people in the Upper Peninsula, are insecure about the future with President Trump’s policies, policies that have caused the cost of living to increase, chaos in trade, food insecurity for our low-wage neighbors and threats to healthcare access for so many of our neighbors on Medicaid and the Affordable Heathcare Act, including my son and perhaps a family member of yours.
We in the Upper Peninsula are untouched by the administration’s unprecedented presence of U.S. soldiers armed with rifles on the streets of America’s big cities, nor have we witnessed the inhumane treatment by masked ICE agents of Hispanics and other people of color without due process. But most people in the U.P. love our democracy, believe in fairness and realize that the President’s tactics are unAmerican.
