E-bikes banned

I am writing this letter today, June 22, because my husband and I just got back from a bike ride out to Presque Isle and I am both upset and angry. We love both walking and biking but both being in our 70s now we decided to buy class 2-E bikes last year.

We did so because they have a throttle and can give us assistance when both going uphill and taking off from the stop. Otherwise we pedal for the exercise and just enjoy slow paced riding.

We live in Harvey and have enjoyed biking from here to Presque Isle and on all the bike paths around Marquette. Well, a week or so ago, we were stopped by a police officer and issued a warning that we are not allowed on them any longer because of the city ordinance banning type 2- and type 3-E bikes.

We had learned about it this spring and we were told by a different city police officer that we were OK and that they weren’t worried about us responsible riders. Now we’re warned that we need to ride in traffic so we rode to Presque Isle on Lakeshore Boulevard, and wow!

We all know how busy that street is and it was quite scary. Cars had to constantly speed around us when there was an opening and we could see they weren’t happy. Someone yelled at us to use the bike trail. That’s all we want. Maybe a special sticker for seniors to allow us back on there.

Starting at $3.23/week.
