‘Big Lie’ being kept alive

To the Journal editor:

Free and fair elections are the hallmark of our form of democracy in the U.S. It is said that elections have consequences. They do. Since our nation’s inception, the loser of the presidential election has always conceded, graciously, for the most part. Until this last election.

All 50 states’ Board of Elections have certified the results of the 2020 presidential election. Red states. Blue states. Purple states. The United States. The election results were and are accurate as verified by every state in the union.

Chris Krebs, President Trump’s director of Cyber Security, has publicly stated that this election was the “most secure in U.S. history and that the claims of “massive voter fraud” were “farcical.” President Trump’s own attorney general, Bill Barr, stated the DOJ found “no voter fraud that could overturn the election.”

And yet former President Trump, many of his congressional supporters and the right wing media keep propagating what is being called “The Big Lie.” And it is a whopper. One can only surmise the reasons for the “Big Lie.” Maintaining power is a good guess for the elected officials using this un American tactic. As for the former president there could be many reasons, fundraising is at the top of the list in my opinion.

The point is that the former president and many elected republicans are using “The Big Lie” to introduce and enact laws aimed at suppressing the vote of those voters not likely to vote Republican. These voter suppression laws and other tactics they are using to gain and maintain political power are un American in my opinion.

If your political party’s agenda is so unpopular that you have to lie, cheat and steal to win elections then maybe it is time to reassess your agenda? If you have to destroy our republic and our form of democracy to stay in power then it is past time that you and your party are defeated and removed from power until you can come up with policies and agendas for the betterment of all Americans, not just the chosen few.

The question for the voters out there is if the republicans willingly spread “The Big Lie” about the election what else are they lying about? Are these the people who should be in charge of our government?
