Area, community should support second grader battling cancer

It’s hard to imagine a better cause to get behind than that of a child battling cancer.

That’s why we’re recommending readers take a good, long look at supporting Ainsley Kargela, a second-grade student at Cherry Creek Elementary School in Harvey who is facing her third battle with a rare form of cancer.

To underscore their support, her classmates at Cherry Creek last Friday all wore camouflage, school officials said.

“When she’s had cancer in the past, we called people who were following her ‘Ainsley’s Army,’ so we decided to go with that theme and show our support to her by wearing all our camo,” said Kim Rae, Ainsley’s second grade teacher at Cherry Creek.

Ainsley is a member of a hockey team and Dawn Dott Dance’s dance team and is said to be very active in the community.

School staff said there are many ways that community members can show their support for Ainsley and her family.

A recent Mining Journal story included the following details:

A car wash will be held at Frei Chevrolet in Marquette from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday by Dawn Dott Dancers, Mom Prom members, Frei Chevrolet employees, as well as community members and Ainsley’s friends and family, with 100 percent of proceeds donated to Ainsley and her family.

For more information on the car wash, visit www.facebook.com/events/359585034562407. For those who would like to volunteer at the car wash, volunteer sign-up and information can be found at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0a45adaf2ea1fb6-fighting.

A donation-based photo shoot will also be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in front of the Peter White Library’s Children’s Branch at the Westwood Mall in Marquette. The photographers will shoot professional photos with gray backgrounds, with couples, families and individuals welcome.

The suggested donation is $10, with all proceeds going toward Ainsley’s medical and travel expenses. For more information, email contact@mermaidandthepike.com.

In addition, a GoFundMe has also been set up to assist Ainsley and her family with travel and medical expenses. To view the GoFundMe page, visit www.gofundme. com/ainsley-fights-the-monster-again?member=139238.
