Marquette a very good place for millennials

Marquette might be a nice place to retire, but apparently it’s also a good place for millennials to seek jobs.

The consumer finance website NerdWallet analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. A subsequent study showed the city ranked 23rd on the best places in the Midwest for millennial job seekers.

Marquette has a population of around 21,500, so that might be considered a limiting factor for hiring potential. However, consider the city has Northern Michigan University, UP Health System-Marquette and many local businesses.

Also, the SmartZone concept, which is focused on bringing high-tech jobs to the area, could bring even more jobs to the area.

Many NMU graduates love Marquette. It is located on Lake Superior, which itself offers many recreational opportunities for a fulfilling lifestyle. The city also has many trails and parks to make spending time outside a pleasurable experience.

And although it doesn’t have the retail opportunities a big city affords, there are plenty of shopping opportunities in the downtown, Marquette Township and beyond.

Obviously, there are many good reasons to stick around Marquette. However, the city needs to nurture and support millennials so they find the jobs that make it affordable to be residents.

According to Ryan Nummela, president of 40 Below Marquette County Young Professionals and a board member of the Lake Superior Community Partnership, Marquette County businesses in 2014 invested over $40 million back into the county for retention and business growth, including infrastructure and equipment.

Many business owners and community leaders realize the need to nurture millennials, some of whom undoubtedly will take their place as future owners and leaders.

Marquette placing so high in the job seeker study is commendable, but the community should build on this to make sure the area’s remarkable potential for millennials is realized.
