New inductees into Alger Roll of Honor well deserving

The Alger County Women’s Roll of Honor has three new members now, after a ceremony last month inducted them into the prestigious group.

Mary Jo Cook, Linda Balko and Deanna Boyak, all Munising natives, were added to the elite group, which recognizes Alger County women who have led enriched lives through work, hobby, volunteerism and or everyday living.

A story penned by Mining Journal Staff Writer Jackie Stack featured on today’s Superior People (page 6A) has all the details.

Anyone who knows these women know they are highly deserving of the honor. But for those who don’t, here’s a little background on each.

Cook founded the honor roll 20 years ago, and was inducted during the 20th anniversary celebration, a fitting moment for her to be added to the ranks of such highly esteemed Alger County women. During her life, Cook was a volunteer at several church and school organizations, was a two-term state board member of the Historical Society of Michigan and was president of the Alger County Historical Society for 19 years. Cook dedicated much her life to service in her community, which earned her a place on the Alger County Women’s Roll of Honor.

Balko lived a life of dedication to others, always available to lend a helping hand or offer advice when needed. She took care of her mother with round-the-clock care when her mother was ailing, and coordinated all of her medical needs. She is currently a communion minister in St. Therese Catholic Church in Au Train, where she also serves as secretary for the Alter Society and launderer for altar cloths and altar attendants garments.

Boyak is known to many in the Munising community through her fundraising efforts for “The Fuzzy Fund,” a charitable fund through the Alger Regional Foundation she created in honor of her late husband. The fund assists the Munising Community with special projects. Boyak also organizes the annual “Fuzzy Boyak” memorial golf tournament, the proceeds of which are spread out among a number of different local organizations.

And as if that weren’t enough, Boyak also donated funds to help make the Fuzzy Boyak Welcome Center possible, a place that is now home to the Alger Chamber of Commerce and the Munising Downtown Development Authority.

All three of these women have contributed greatly to the well-being of many communities in Alger County. We feel they are perfect additions to this wonderful group of honored women.
