Marquette Senior Center programs keep seniors active

We like what’s going on at the Marquette Senior Center, programs that aim to keep older folks active year round.

The Senior Center’s Silver Sampler program includes an ice fishing class along with three different snowshoeing opportunities: an easy trail in Saux Head, an advanced trail in Big Bay and a scenic trail, Senior Services Manager Maureen McFadden told The Mining Journal for a recent story on the matter.

“The Silver Sampler … (teaches) people how to recreate in the outdoors safely and give them the skills to do so,” said McFadden in the story.

Additionally, the center offers a wide variety of indoor programming for seniors to participate in, including pickleball, a group fitness class and Tai Chi.

Seniors can also get pampered at the foot clinic or play pinochle with friends. There are even specialized support groups for elders with Parkinson’s.

We haven’t even mentioned their art programs including dance, visual arts and theater. Senior Visual Art Classes are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. along with The Senior Theatre Experience Feb. 13 and 27 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The center will also sponsor an AARP Smart Driver Class from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 16-17 at the Lakeview Arena. Seniors are recommended to take the class to prevent any unwanted car accidents.

This is the tip of the iceberg. This are happening at the Marquette Senior Center. Literally, there is something for everyone.

Give them a call at 906-228-0456 and see if they have an activity you can get involved with.
