Susan Skewis

ISHPEMING, MI – Susan C. Skewis, age 73, of 733 E. Empire St., Ishpeming, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 9, 2025, with her loving husband Mike by her side.

Born in Mt. Pleasant, MI, on August 29, 1951, Susan was the daughter of the late Gloriana (Flaugher) and Earl E. ‘Scar’ Bushong. A dedicated Licensed Practical Nurse, Susan served her community for 25 years through positions at Bell Hospital, UP Home Health and Hospice, Marquette County Medical Care Facility, and local physician offices.

Sue found joy in life’s simple pleasures. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing softball and tennis. In retirement, she and her husband Mike shared a love of travel-later exchanging distant adventures for local outings due to health concerns. A devoted pet lover, Sue cherished her Yorkies-Max, Echo, and Gunner-and never passed up a chance to test her luck at the local casino.

She is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Michael J. Skewis; granddaughters Michaela Skewis and Morgan (James) Britton; two great-grandchildren, Julia and Dean Britton; sisters Sandra Mead and Sheila (Al) Sullivan; brothers Lloyd (Diana) Bushong and Leslie Bushong; mother-in-law Mary Skewis; brother-in-law James (Vicky) Skewis; sisters-in-law Peggy (Gary) Petersen and Rosemary (Roland) Korpi; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Michael Skewis; her grandson, Richard Burchfield; her brother, Lee Bushong; her sisters-in-law, Sharon Johnson and Nancy Skewis; brothers-in-law Joe Hebert and Jim Mead; and her nephew, Don Hebert.

A celebration of Susan’s life will be held on Friday, June 13, 2025, from 12:00­2:00 p.m. at Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home where the Upper Peninsula Nurses Honor Guard will hold the Nightingale Tribute at 1:45pm, interment to follow at Ishpeming Cemetery.
