Eston Gene Contois

MARQUETTE, MI – Eston Gene Contois, age 85, of Marquette, passed away Friday, September 20, 2024, at the Michigan Veterans Home D.J. Jacobetti, in the loving care of his family and caregivers.

Born on December 2, 1938, in Marquette, the son of Russell and Helen (Hendrickson) Contois, Eston’s journey was one marked by service, family, and the simple joys of life. Eston was raised in Marquette. At the young age of 18, he answered the call of duty and joined the United States Marines. It was during his service from 1958 to 1961 that he earned his GED and served as a prison guard, laying a foundation of discipline and resilience that would define his character.

After his honorable discharge from the Marines, Eston’s heart led him back to Marquette, where he would meet and marry the love of his life, Claudine, on November 7, 1970. Their union was a testament to love and partnership, flourishing over 53 years of marriage. In May of 1974, Eston continued his commitment to service by joining the National Guard. There, he distinguished himself as an expert marksman, winning the state championship in the M-14 category numerous times, a testament to his skill and dedication.

Eston’s professional life was equally as impressive, spanning 45 years at the Marquette Mining Journal. He began his career as a linotype operator and, through his hard work and expertise, rose to the position of printer. His dedication to his craft was evident to all who worked alongside him.

Outside of work and service, Eston, affectionately known as “Resten Eston” for his love of relaxation, enjoyed a life rich with hobbies and time spent in nature. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and camper, and he found solace in tending to his garden. Evenings spent playing cards with friends and family were among his favorite pastimes.

Eston’s legacy is carried on by his beloved wife, Claudine, and their children: Dale (Peggy) Bray, Daniel Bray, Donald (Carol) Bray, and Dennis (Mary) Bray, all of Skandia, MI. His life was further enriched by his 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, with the recent joy of welcoming a great-great-grandchild into the family. He is also survived by his brothers, Eldon (Jean) Contois, Roger (Lucille) Contois, and Michael (Sue) Contois, along with several nieces and nephews who will fondly remember their uncle’s warmth and guidance.

Eston was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Diane Bryson Contois; his niece, Vickie Galloway; and his nephew, James Jarvinen. Their memories remain a cherished part of his story.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at D.J. Jacobetti for their wonderful care and support during Eston’s final days. His presence will be deeply missed, but the impact of his life will continue to be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

As we bid farewell to Eston Gene Contois, we celebrate a life lived with honor, love, and a gentle spirit that brought light to the lives of many. His story is one of a true hometown hero, a man who served his country, cherished his family, and embraced the simple pleasures of life with a contented heart. May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

Honoring Eston’s request, no public service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Michigan Home for Veterans D.J. Jacobetti Life Enrichment Fund, 425 Fisher Street, Marquette, MI. 49855.
