Theodore Hoover ‘Ted’ Koehler

MARQUETTE, MI – Theodore Hoover “Ted” Koehler, age 92, of Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday, June 27, 2021, at home, in the loving, comforting care of his family.

Born May 8, 1929, in Weatherly, Pennsylvania, a son of Theodore and Gladys (Correll) Koehler, Sr., Ted was raised in Weatherly and graduated from Weatherly High School. Following high school, Ted joined the US Navy, serving aboard the USS Valley Forge. Upon his honorable discharge, he attended Michigan State University where he received his masters degree. He began his career as a police officer before beginning work in the Michigan Department of Corrections, beginning in the Lansing office.

He was then transferred to the Detroit office where he served as head of parole and probation in Wayne County. In 1974, he became the warden of the Marquette Branch Prison, from where he retired in 1989. In his leisure, Ted enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, and playing cards. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, a US Navy veteran, member of the Shriners, and Jopling Post 44 of the American Legion.

Ted is survived by his wife, Ruth (Kunkel) Koehler; his children, Ronald Elwood (Mary) Koehler, Brian Todd (Cassandra) Koehler, and Kimberly Koehler (John) Tish; his grandchildren, Robert Koehler, Heidi Koeher, Kurtis Koehler, Matthew Tish, Michael Tish, Madison Tish, and Frank Koehler; a sister, Beverly Moser.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Gary Koehler.

Friends may call at Messiah Lutheran Church on Friday, July 2, beginning at 10:00 am, until the time of service at 11:00 am. Pastors Rev. Dr. Andrew Plocher and Rev. Molly Eversoll will officiate. Interment will be made in the Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Messiah Lutheran Church, 305 W. Magnetic Street, Marquette, MI 49855.
