Michael Paul Cardoni, M.D.

MARQUETTE, MI – Michael Paul Cardoni, M.D., age 74, of Marquette, entered eternal life Monday, May 10, 2021, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in the loving care of his family.

Born August 25, 1946, in Marquette, a son of Jack and Elsie (Columbo) Cardoni, Michael was raised in Marquette and graduated from Bishop Baraga High School, Class of 1965. Michael enrolled in the University of Michigan Medical School, pursuing, and later fulfilling, his dream of becoming a physician. Upon receiving his medical degree, he returned to Marquette where he practiced internal medicine for over 40 years. For the last ten years of his career, he served as a thyroid specialist, retiring in 2014. He was known as a very passionate and dedicated physician, earning the respect of his peers and those he served in the community. In his younger years, Michael served with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. In his leisure moments he enjoyed bird hunting with his dogs, growing and caring for his fruit, flower and vegetable gardens. However, the times he treasured most were those with family, especially times spent at his camp in the company of his constant English Setter companions, Lido and Briar.

Michael is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Janet Ackerman, whom he married in 1970; his son, Kevin (Karol) Cardoni of Ishpeming; three grandchildren, Mariah (Addison Martin) Cardoni of Marquette, Jackson Cardoni of Ishpeming and Kylie Cardoni of Ishpeming; his brother, Robert Cardoni of Dearborn, MI; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call at the Bishop’s Room located at St. Peter Cathedral on Tuesday, May 18, beginning at 11:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Cathedral at 1:00 pm Tuesday with Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber, pastor, as celebrant. Masks and social distancing required. Interment will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
