M. Joy Sleeper

NEWBERRY, MI – M. Joy Sleeper, 96, of Newberry passed away peacefully Monday afternoon April 1, 2020 at her residence with her loving family at her side.

Born March 1, 1924 in East Lansing, daughter of the late Ingwald and Clara (Hooper) Wangberg, Joy was a 1942 graduate and Salutatorian of Baldwin High School in Birmingham and went on to attend Olivet College, Western Reserve University and Western Michigan University.

Joy served in the United States Navy WAVES during World War II where she attained the rank of Storekeeper First Class at the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts in Cleveland, OH until her honorable discharge on August 17, 1946.

On June 26, 1948, Joy was united in marriage to Keith S. Sleeper in Birmingham and they both settled in Newberry where they operated Sleeper Appliances for 37 years.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Joy is preceded in death by her siblings Harold, Frank, David and daughter-in-law Gail.

Survivors include her son David (Cindy Orlich) Sleeper of Sanford and daughters Barbara Sleeper, Mary Sleeper and Nancy Sleeper all of Newberry; grandchildren Dr. Keith (Kelly) Sleeper, DDS of Alger and Kirsten (Aron) Carlson of Royal Oak; great grandchildren Russell and Sloane Carlson and Sara Joy and Samantha Gail Sleeper. sister-in-laws Fran Wangberg, Bev Wangberg and Dorothy Wangberg.

Joy was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newberry where she served in several positions including Deacon, Treasurer, Financial Secretary and past President of the Presbyterian Women.

She was most proud of her service to her country and was a member of American Legion Post #74 of Newberry where she was the recipient of the Inaugural Community Service Award in 2014 and participated in the first U.P. Honor Flight to Washington, DC in 2011.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at the First Presbyterian Church in Newberry with interment and military honors conducted by the American Legion Post #74 and the United States Navy Honor Guard at Forest Home Cemetery.
