Jerome ‘Jerry’ Hughes

HARBOR SPRINGS, MI – Jerome (Jerry) Albert Hughes (78) of Harbor Springs died peacefully on April 4, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.

Jerry was born in Ishpeming, MI in January 1941 to Timothy C. Hughes and Dorothy Webb. Siblings included Mary Jane (Coffee), Timothy P and Michael. Jerry attended St John’s school, graduated from Ishpeming High in 1959 and Northern Michigan University in 1963. He fulfilled his medical technology internship at Hurley Hospital in Flint. There he met another intern from Michigan Tech, Kay Frances Lentz, from Midland.

Jerry and Kay were married for over 55 years and like many marriages they weathered many storms together with love, patience and dedication. They lived together in Harbor Springs for 53 years in the same blue house on M119. Jerry worked as lab manager at Lockwood McDonald Hospital in Petoskey, then at the Microbiology Lab in NMH. Later, in semi-retirement, he worked for Internal Medicine of Northern Michigan, retiring fully in 2003.

Jerry and Kay welcomed 6 children: Sergeant First Class Sean Hughes, USA Retired (Suk Chin Park) Hinesville, GA, Kevin Hughes (Claire Ye) Lomita, CA , JenniferArgeropoulos (Jim) Marquette, MI, Bridget Trevino Brighton, MI , Erin Hughes-Krieger (Aaron) Howell, MI and Captain Tom Hughes, ARNG (Angela) Annandale, Virgina. Together they loved and cherished their children, grandchildren (16) and 2 great-grandchildren.

Jerry enjoyed muzzleloading and target shooting, which is how he met some of his lifelong friends. He and his family spent time on their property near Republic and enjoyed swimming on Sunson Lake. He was an avid bicyclist placing in the Ore to Shore in Marquette just six years ago. Most of all he loved sailing on the beautiful harbors of Northern Michigan and the North Channel on Lake Huron in Canada. Late in life he wasn’t able to manage the boat and his family hopes in heaven he has found his clear blue waters to sail.

Please join the family May 11, 2019 at St Frances Xavier Church, Petoskey in the Gathering Space for Visitation at 10 AM. The funeral Mass will follow at 11 AM.
