ISHPEMING, MI – David M. Ackland Jr., age 58, of Ishpeming, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on Sunday, January 6, 2019, while at his home.

David was born in Marquette, on May 6, 1960, to David and Kathleen (Heikkinen) Ackland. He grew up in Ishpeming and attended Westwood High School, graduating with the class of 1978. He then moved to Illinois where he married his wife Lisa in 1982. They resided in Illinois until 1995 when they moved to Iowa where they lived until they moved back to Ishpeming in 2015.

David’s family and his faith were the most important things to him. David loved kids, and kids loved him. David loved horseback riding, camping and camp fires. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved to sing, enjoyed country music, was a Minnesota Vikings fan, and always made everyone laugh.

David will be fondly remembered as being very giving and generous, as well as a practical joker. David was a Deputy Sheriff for the Lee County Sheriffs office in Iowa.

David is survived by his parents, wife- Lisa (Scroggins) Ackland, 2 children- David and Abigail Ackland, 5 siblings- Janet Carlson, Diane (Tim) Markham, Carol (Braun) Ogea, Sarah (David) Tackman, Brian (Nora) Ackland, special brother-in-law- Matthew Carlson, special friends- Rick and Janice Ekle, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents- Anselm and Anna Heikkinen, paternal grandparents- Leonard and Mildred Ackland, uncle- Mark Heikkinen, along with numerous aunts and uncles.

David’s family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00am until the time of his service at 12:00 noon on Saturday January 12, 2019, at the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 noon with Rev. D. Michael Carriere officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Wesley United Methodist Church Hall. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association in memory of David.
