ROCKVILLE, MD-MARQUETTE, MI – Mary L. (Anderson) Melvin, age 89, of Rockville, Maryland, formerly of Marquette, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Robert Melvin (Bob) and her sister, Dorothy (Anderson) Mattson and brother-in-law, Arthur Mattson.
She is survived by her son, Randy Melvin, New Market, Maryland, her daughter, Robin Melvin Sabo (Greg), Williamsburg, Virginia, her aunt, Violet Guindon and by nieces, Cindy Etten (Les), Diane Lealos (Mike), a nephew, Jim Mattson (Sherry) and their families.
Mary believed in the power of education, returning to school in her mid-30’s to finish her Bachelor’s degree and later her Master’s degree at the University of Maryland. She taught Home Economics at Wheaton High School in Montgomery County, Maryland for over 30 years. Mary loved teaching, cooking, flower arranging, spending time with her family and her native Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time 11 a.m. on Monday, September 24, 2018 at Marquette Hope Church, Skandia campus, 189 Krieger Drive, Skandia, Michigan. Rev. Kristi Hintz will officiate. Interment will be made in the Park Cemetery, Marquette.
The family wishes to thank the many kind and caring staff members at Kindley Assistant Living, Asbury Methodist Village, Gaithersburg, Maryland who cared for Mary over the past 5 years.
