Myron Albert Basal

BEAVER GROVE, MI – Myron Albert Basal passed away at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans on Thursday, November 16, 2017.

Myron was the last of the original settlers in the Beaver Grove area from the George Basal Family. He was born October 10, 1929. He was the youngest of 12 children and grew up on the family farm down Basal Road. He served in the Korean War starting as infantry, then as a medic. He received a gunshot wound on February 2, 1952 while dragging his wounded buddy to safety. He received his purple heart and remained in the war as a mechanic. When he returned from the war, he was hired by the Michigan Department of Corrections as a Corrections Officer. During his career he worked his way up to Shift Commander. He was in charge of the squad, guarding the fire trucks, during the prison riot in May 1981. In December of 1981 Myron retired and enjoyed life with his wife Arlene and family. Myron and Arlene ran a family farm where they grew pumpkins and cared for their orchards. Many school children came to visit for tours and they enjoyed selling their pumpkins and apples to the public. Myron loved trapping, hunting, fishing, gardening, building, going to the casinos and spending time at camp with his family and friends. Being the youngest, he most often times took care of his parents and siblings in their later years. He always gave a helping hand to many. He was a loving father and grandfather. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, teaching them about fishing, gardening and instilling a strong work ethic. They enjoyed watching Tiger baseball games together. Myron was a strong man who meant the world to his family and friends. He was a mentor to many, especially his “engineers” at camp, Jim, John, Scotty, Ted, Bruce and their boys.

Myron was preceded in death by his wife Arlene (Swenor) Basal; his parents George and Martha (Gentz) Basal; siblings (and spouses) Otto, Herman, Martha, Laura, Lillian, George Jr., Mabel, Orville, Ilene, Louis and Ruth.

He is survived by his son Michael and wife Pamela Basal; his grandchildren Tom and Audra (Basal) Walter and Matthew Basal; his daughter Lori (Basal) Anderson and husband Alan; granddaughter Megan Anderson; and by many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 20, from 1:00 PM until time of service at 3:00 PM at the Fassbender Funeral Home. A corrections officer honor guard will be posted during visitation and Veterans honors will be rendered by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380. A reception will follow. Spring interment will be made in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Green Garden.
