Need a good laugh? Two TV shows that will make you roar

There’s a new “must-watch” program on my television viewing list, especially now that we’re in that gap between the end of the NHL season and the start of the NFL season.

This recommendation comes with an advisory. I feel the need to issue said advisory as a few years ago, a sweet senior citizen read me the riot act for telling people how hilarious “The Big Bang Theory” is. She was upset with me because of some of the language which while not banned does refer to human sexual behavior.

She was extremely disappointed I would tell people to watch something of that nature. While I understood her perspective, the humanity of the show counterbalances any vulgarity, in my humble opinion.

Sometimes that comedy makes me cry when I witness Sheldon’s awkwardness around real emotion.

Anyway, the show I am going to recommend makes me laugh so loud, my three cats get a bit frightened, probably wondering if their owner has finally gone off her rocker.

“Lip Sync Battle” is the show. It’s on Spike TV and it is a riot. Created by actors John Krasinski, Emily Blunt and Stephen Merchant, the show pits two celebrities in a competition for audience applause. Each lip syncs two songs and audience cheers are solicited to decide the champion of each episode.

The songs chosen are part of what makes the show laugh-out-loud funny as they often seem to be a real surprise, at least when considering the public persona of any given celebrity.

Examples? How about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson lip syncing a Taylor Swift tune? Hoda Kotb from NBC News chose “Baby Got Back.” Mike Tyson (Mike Tyson!?!) chose a Rolling Stones number.

It all makes me smile just thinking about it.

One of my all-time favorites – LL Cool J – is the host and watching him having so much fun is a bonus of “Lip Sync Battle.”

The advisory part is that some of the songs are more than a bit risque, so if that upsets your sensibilities, you might not want to tune in. But I plan to catch up on the two episodes of the first 10 which I missed and will be ready for new episodes when they return July 9.

July 16 promises Deion Sanders vs. Justin Bieber: I mean, how can you be a pop culture fan and miss that matchup?

The show, I do believe, was created based on a frequent feature of “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” in which similar battles have taken place. While I haven’t seen those all, anyone who hasn’t seen the epic faceoff between Fallon and Emma Stone needs to get on YouTube now to watch that.

And about Jimmy Fallon: Fabulous host. Working early most days, I don’t get to catch many “Tonight” broadcasts when they first air. But thanks to YouTube and reruns, I have seen more than a few now and I am always impressed with Fallon, who seems to bring out the best in his guests.

And seems to genuinely like people.

If you need a laugh, please try “Lip Sync Battle” and “Fallon.” Prepare to laugh. Hard.

That’s something we all need to do more, don’t you think?
