LAURIUM — Laurium is preparing for the Christmas Season again, with the announcement of the second annual Holiday Decorating Contest.

In a Nov. 29 email, the village released an announcement inviting Laurium residents and business owners to participate in the contest and show off their holiday spirit.

“Do you feel like you need to beat your neighbor’s light display from last year?” the announcement asks. “Get out all your lights, bows, and holiday displays.”

Laurium Village Trustee Amy Schneiderhan said: “Last year the lights in Laurium were amazing. We anticipate this year will be even bigger and better, and we encourage residents to think outside the box and spread some holiday cheer.”

The contest is open to all businesses and homeowners in the village, said Schneiderhan. To compete in the contest:

– An entry form must be completed, signed, and submitted to the village office no later than Friday, December 17.

– Registration forms can be mailed to P.O. Box 627 or dropped off at the village office, located at 310 Hecla Street.

– A convenient, no-contact drop box is located outside the village entrance.

– Judging will take place on Sunday, Dec 19, with winners chosen at the Dec. 21, Village Council meeting.

New this year, there will be cash prizes awarded to the top three winners, Schneiderhan said. The cash prizes are sponsored by Salon 1281 and the Market Place. First place will win $100 or a skating party, second and third places will win $50 each.

And, while residents and business owners are busy decorating for the contest, Santa will also be in town. He will be strapping on his skates at the Gipp Ice Arena on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 4 – 6 p.m. to skate with the children who attend the event.

“We weren’t able to hold this event last year due to the pandemic,” said Schneiderhan. “This event is so wonderful, and everyone looks forward to it.”

This event, she added, is providing children another opportunity to pass along their holiday wish list and take photos with Santa, but also have a carefree time. There will be holiday music and festive holiday décor.

“We encourage you to grab your Santa hat and imagination,” Schneiderhan said, “and join us for some fun.”
