Norway man charged in pileup

IRON MOUNTAIN — A 63-year-old Norway man arrested in connection with a seven-car accident last month in Iron Mountain faces felony drug charges, said Edwin C. Mattson, director of police and fire services.

Harvey J. Bennett Jr. is being charged as an habitual offender, fourth offense notice, by Dickinson County Prosecutor Lisa Richards.

The charges include delivery/manufacture of methamphetamine, a 20-year felony; possession of methamphetamine, a 10-year felony; and operating while intoxicated, third offense.

Bennett was arraigned in 95-B District Court and is free on a $7,500 cash bond, Mattson said. A preliminary hearing was set for Oct. 22.

Bennett was northbound in pickup truck on Stephenson Avenue on Sept. 25 when he crossed into the left turn lane at H Street, sideswiping two cars and rear-ending an SUV, police said. The collision sent the SUV into three other vehicles waiting at a light.

Two drivers injured in the chain-reaction crash were transported to Dickinson County Healthcare System for evaluation.
