Woman dies in snowmobile crash

MARQUETTE — One Nebraska woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a snowmobile accident on Lake Gogebic at 2:31 a.m. Thursday, according to the Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office.

Jill Swarts, 46, of Gretna, Nebraska, was following a group of other snowmobiles while traveling south on the west shore of Lake Gogebic when she went off into the shoreline, striking some rocks in the area. She was ejected from the snowmobile, striking a fallen tree and suffering fatal injuries.

Swarts was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital by Cane’s Funeral Home.

According to police, both speed and weather were factors in the accident, which reamins under investigation.

The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Michigan State Police troopers from Wakefield and Iron Mountain posts, as well as the chief of the Marenisco Police Department. SONCO South and Beacon of Ironwood were also on scene.
