30 years ago MARQUETTE – Six Northern Michigan University students re-enacted the lives of people who were at Copper Harbor’s Fort Wilkins in the late 17th century. The students were assisted by NMU faculty and staff as they prepared for work as living history interns throughout the summer at Fort Wilkins State Park. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – Although common in urban areas, a “cops on bikes” squad didn’t take to the streets in Marquette until this year. With a $1,000 grant from the Kaufman Foundation, the police department bought a pair of Trek bikes from the Sports Rack, which donated additional police equipment the bike officers need. “Cops on bikes certainly isn’t a new idea,” said Marquette Police Chief Sal Sarvello, “but we noticed a need for this type of policing in the area.” An officer on a bike has more flexibility than in a car. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – Parking at Marquette Senior High School will cost students $20 a year starting this fall, the school board decided Monday. The proposal, which passed unanimously, is an attempt to solve crowded parking conditions with a sticker program. With 500 parking spaces available for students, Superintendent Bill Bergin estimated the program would raise about $10,000 per year for the district’s general fund. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – Renovation began on the 107-year-old Rosewood Inn Thursday, ending years of disagreement between building owner Rhys Mussman of Hebron, Ind., and the city of Marquette. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — More than 12,000 spectators crowded into Mattson Lower Harbor Park in Marquette Monday night to view fireworks said Jerry Doucette, chairman of the Marquette American Legion Fourth of July Corporation.
