30 years ago ISHPEMING – Skully, a friendly skeleton, will be used to encourage youthful interest in the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame and Museum in Ishpeming. Greg Speirs of Bronxville, N.Y. who was a designer for the legendary rock group “The Grateful Dead has donated a logo the ski hall is using on T-shirts to raise money. The design includes a friendly skeleton named Skullman “Skully” and is the ski halls current logo. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – Marquette General Hospital will have its 17th annual Halloween Blood Drive starting today and ending Oct. 31. The goal for this year is 600 units of blood either donated or pledged to donate. Everyone who donates or pledges to donate will receive a free coupon for a Big Boy sandwich. The blood drive will begin today at Blockbuster video. Participants will receive pizza and coupons for a free movie rental. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – A survey by the Marquette Country team Voice project at the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department indicates it’s harder for underage drinkers to buy alcohol in Marquette County than it was several years ago. In February 1993, an MCTV study found that underage drinkers were successful buying alcohol from bars, grocery, and convenience stores 45 percent of the time. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – Little rain fell last month. The average temperature for September was 54 degrees, only one tenth of a degree below normal, according to climatological data released by the national station in Negaunee Township. The highest temperature for the month was 83 degrees on Sept. 4 and the lowest, 26 degrees on Sept. 23. There were three days when the temperature dipped below freezing. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – Marquette moved a step closer to filtered drinking water Monday, when city commissioners approved a $3.5 million contract for what will become the largest microfiltration plant of its kind in the nation. The total cost for the project is expected to be $6.7 million. Marquette City officials have accepted an innovative design that was recently lauded by the Michigan Chapter of the American Water Works Association.
