MARQUETTE – Voices for Youth has received a grant of $255,000 to aid the county’s homeless and runaway teenagers for another three years. This was the only new Health and Human Services grant delivered in Michigan, proving its necessity and the group’s ability to collaboratively problem solve. Voices for Youth first opened its doors in March 1993, founded by the Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan Inc., and in its first two years, assisted over 600 kids. The grant money will be put towards funding more staff, which will give current employees the time to write grants and fundraise upcoming projects. The agency hopes to expand into other U.P. Counties in the future.

MARQUETTE – During the month of October, the number of job seekers who applied to the Marquette office of the Michigan Employment Security Commission (MESC) plummeted to 284 (117 women, 33 veterans and 22 persons with disabilities). In September, the number of jobless citizens were 337, as compared with last October’s 391 citizens seeking employment. The MESC provided jobs to those applying to their service in fields of forestry, mining, finance, retail, insurance, real estate, among others. Frank B. Paitl, MESC office manager, comments on the optimistic economic conditions and employment opportunities that these new statistics display. However, he notes, there will be fluctuations in the upcoming data as seasonal layoffs arrive.
