Both holiday happenings were part of the recent “Pikku Joulu” (“Little Christmas” in Finnish) celebration at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Negaunee. 30 years ago ISHPEMING – A new film on the history of skiing in Michigan, including a segment on Ishpeming’s ski-jumping legacy, will air at 8 tonight on WNMU Public TV 13. In the 90-minute program titled “Winter Wonderland,” Traverse City based independent filmmaker Bill Jamerson examines the origins of skiing in the U.P. The program contains historic footage of the building of the Pine Mountain Ski Jump in Iron Mountain and early ski jumping days in Ishpeming. 30 years ago MUNISING – Bright sunshine and light winds provided ideal weather conditions Monday afternoon to break up about 600 gallons of diesel fuel a Canadian tugboat accidentally dumped into Munising Bay. U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Bernie Tobolski said ground and air searches had turned up no heavy pockets of fuel that could be skimmed off the water surface. 30 years ago MARQUETTE - U.S. Olympic Education Center (USOEC) short track speed skating coach Jeroen Otter is expecting records to fall this weekend during the U.S. Speed Skating traveling team trials at Northern Michigan University’s newly-renovated PEIF arena. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see several records broken,” said Otter, who is also the U.S. national coach. “We have world class ice, and it’s fast ice.” The PEIF arena, training site of the USOEC team, was recently expanded to the size of an international ice surface of 20,000 square feet. 30 years ago MARQUETTE - Bruce Pesola, local contractor, is looking to bring new life to the former Heritage House Hotel on North Front street. Now bustling with light and sound from renovators, the building is seeing its first visitors since its abandonment in 1982. If all goes well, this will be a new investment for Pesola, a hotel he is calling “The Landmark Inn of Marquette.” Pesola took ownership of the property from Ed Havlik of Grand Rapids on November 3rd, and the Marquette City Commission will hold a public hearing on whether or not to transfer a tax abatement to Pesola ...
