30 years REPUBLIC — The idled Republic Mine, once the mighty lifeblood of this small west Marquette County town, is being permanently closed, the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company announced this morning. Idle for 15 years, activities necessary for closing the mine have begun. After suspending operations in 1981, Cliffs deferred a decision on permanently closing the mine in hopes that market conditions would improve so that iron ore production could resume. 30 years ago MARQUETTE— In an effort to aid economic expansion in the Upper Peninsula, CellularOne is offering free phones and services to new businesses. Cellular phones, including a year of unlimited airtime and access, will be offered to new firms as part of a nationwide plan to help spur growth in PriCellular Corp’s service areas. An undetermined number of new jobs must be created to qualify for the offer. 30 years ago ISHPEMING — The city of Ishpeming and two local hospitals are cooperating on a paramedic training program aimed at saving more West End Lives. The 14-month paramedic training program for 21 local emergency medical technicians and EMT specialists is expected to begin in February, said Ishpeming City Manager John Korhonen. While final contact details are still being worked out, the Ishpeming City Council last week approved a letter of understanding so classes can begin. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — A semi-tractor trailer filled with leachate from the Marquette County Landfill turned on its side near the Carp River early Saturday afternoon, spilling foul smelling but nontoxic liquid onto the roadway’s shoulder and ditch. Driver George LaFave of Marquette said that when he crested a small hill, a snowmobile groomer in the roadway in front of him prevented him from passing. The rig is owned by U.P. 30 years ago ISHPEMING — The NICE board, meeting in special session Tuesday, asked for more, options as to exactly where to situate the new kindergarten through eighth grade school building on a 40-arce district-owned tract near the existing Westwood High School. Bob Paullin, the project consultant from Grand Rapids, will meet with the design team to develop a few more possibilities. The bidding process is expected to begin in late February with groundbreaking planned by June. 30 years ago NEGAUNEE — Susan Rasch had always heard people talk about how great it would be to have a winter festival in western Marquette County. “So I just said, ‘Let’s quit talking about it. Let’s just do it,’” recalled Rasch, owner of the Duck Factory in Negaunee. The result: the inaugural Heikki Lunta Winter Fest, set for Jan. 27 through Feb. 4 in the Negaunee-Ishpeming area.
