MUNISING — A Munising income tax on non-residents working in the city is not popular in surrounding townships. AuTrain Township Supervisor Herb Brown suggested that the township may consider charging city residents who use the townships services and facilities. “This is the first I’ve heard of it,” he said. “Does that open the door for us the charge city residents who visit our lakes and use our roads?” Munising Township supervisor Robert McQuisten, who has criticized the city income tax concept since it was first discussed in April, was restrained. “I know that I don’t like (city income taxes),” he said this morning. I’ve got nothing more to say. It’s (the city’s) business. They do what they have to do.”

GRAND MARAIS — After an interval of almost four years Grand Marais again is connected with the outside world by telephone. A line from Seney to Grand Marais was opened yesterday by Michigan Bell Telephone company officially. Grand Marais has been without telephone service since February, 1927, when fire destroyed the terminal of the Tri-County Telephone company at Seney, whose line to Grand Marais linked the town with the main line of Michigan Bell company. Since the fire the Tri-County company had financial difficulties in rebuilding the destroyed equipment which was too much for its resources. The new line is of the best construction, Copper metallic wire and “Black Diamond” poles were used in the erection, Bell officials feeling that using the best possible construction methods the amount of maintenance work required would be reduced to a minimum and it would give better service and be cheaper in the end, when great distance from Marquette was considered. At present there is but one phone in Grand Marais, a toll station installed in the Green Shingles hotel. The line from Grand Marais connects Seney with the Marquette-Newberry circuit and direction of the place called will determine whether the call will be handled by the Marquette or Newberry exchange.
